Still hope for US Online Bingo in Etowah County

In a report published in the online newspaper – The Gadsden times yesterday there may be some hope for online bingo players in Etowah County.

Despite the sad news that financial restriction are likely to stay on most forms of online gambling including Online Bingo, Online Poker and Casino games, there is still a strong band of public figures who are keen to support a more relaxed stance so that the government can reap some benefits of the largest online industries.

“MONTGOMERY — State Rep. Craig Ford of Gadsden said Etowah County officials should seek judicial review of the local bingo constitutional amendment because he believes it would allow bingo and much-needed county revenue.

“I think it would be a good economic development to create jobs, and if it’s legal, let’s go with it,” Ford said. “I think we ought to challenge it locally.”
Online Bingo bingo hasn’t been ruled illegal, but the combination of a Supreme Court ruling and Gov. Bob Riley’s Task Force on Illegal Gambling has caused internet bingo sites to close state-wide.
The climate on bingo largely kept developers from being able to pursue plans for a significant bingo casino for Etowah County that would attract customers from the Birmingham, Atlanta and Chattanooga, Tenn., areas.
Throw in last year’s federal indictments for alleged legislative bingo vote-buying, and there’s little chance that something positive will happen in the 2011 legislative session or beyond to make bingo legal.
Etowah County Sheriff Todd Entrekin on Thursday said he met with Attorney General-elect Luther Strange and his chief-of-staff designate, Richard Allen, late last month about bingo both statewide and in Etowah County.
“He let me know where he stood with the task force,” Entrekin said. “He says until someone rules, we are going to continue to keep it from happening.”
The Supreme Court has defined legal bingo, but no court has ruled that electronic bingo as it was being played in several counties was illegal. A definition of illegal bingo came from Riley and his task force commander, Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson.
Gov.-elect Robert Bentley said he will move the task force under Strange’s control when both take office on Jan. 17. In a joint statement last month, Strange said he will enforce “the rule of law.”
He and Bentley warned that currently closed casinos should not reopen when they take office.
Jessica Garrison, a spokeswoman for Strange, said he has been meeting with local law enforcement officials and district attorneys about gambling.
Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp said he believes the “future of electronic bingo rests with the Legislature.”
“If I have anything to do with bingo in Etowah County, it will be to act in concert with the attorney general’s office to come up with clean bingo legislation to go to the people of the state of Alabama and solve it once and for all,” Harp said.
